History
Apex Hotels was established in 1996 with the opening of the Apex
International Hotel in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket. A ten-month conversion
of the former Heriot-Watt University Mountbatten Building saw the hotel
open in May 1996 with 120 rooms.

Originally launched as a budget three-star hotel, the Apex
International went through a complete refurbishment in early 1998 and
transformed into a 4 star property. An additional 51 rooms were also
added at this time.

Due to the success of the initial hotel, Apex Hotels secured a site
in the Haymarket area of Edinburgh in August 1997 and converted a
derelict office building into the Apex European, a 66-room, 4 star
property.

A second former office building was acquired in the Grassmarket
area and opened as the 4 star Apex City Hotel in July 2002. The design,
content and service culture of the Apex City has now been drawn from
and implemented across the entire brand.

The company’s first new-build property and its first hotel outside
Edinburgh is the 4 star Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa in Dundee.
Opened in March 2003, the hotel provides 153 rooms, conference and
event facilities for up to 450, a bar, brasserie, restaurant and a Spa
with a pool, hot tubs, sauna, steam room and Technogym™. The Apex City
Quay Hotel & Spa is a pivotal development within the regeneration
of the city’s waterfront area. The team in Dundee have particularly
worked hard to position the Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa as a key
member of the local community.

In November 2005, Apex Hotels expanded its portfolio further with
the opening of the Apex City of London Hotel, located between Tower
Bridge and the Bank of England. The former office building has been
transformed into a focal point of the area, offering 130 bedroom 4 star
luxury. Continuing the contemporary Apex style, this is the company’s
first property situated outside Scotland.
